More TV Music I Wrote -Sunshine Cuisine with Chef Jean-Pierre
It was an honor to be asked to write the theme music and bumpers when @ChefJeanPierre turned his bestselling cookbook “Sunshine Cuisine” into a cooking show broadcast nationally on PBS in the mid 90’s.
We also did an other series together, Incredible Cuisine, and after I wrote that theme Chef Jean Pierre invited me for dinner at his award-winning South Florida restaurant, The Left Bank. I still remember the Chilean Sea Bass I had that night as one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten. But maybe the best part of that night was watching Chef pull up in his Porsche with a beautiful lady by his side cranking my new theme song over the speakers.

I'm a fan of Mic Parts' DIY kits. Today, we pair the Mic Parts T-84 55 Circuit kit with the incredible 3u Audio Flat K87 capsule, a hybrid mic capsule that is unlike most c...

Find out why Rolling Stone just raved about Between Lightning and Thunder, the new album by Miles East. Well, ok, maybe it has to do more with his incredible voice and songwriting and the Blake Morgan production and mix, but nearly everything you hear on this album was recorded with one of the custom MYN mics I built for Blake. So, I'm thrilled to share this with you because regardless of whose...

Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff Commercial Voice Over Spots
Awesome upload. ❤
Thank you very much. This part of my life was so long ago,, but I'm very happy to share it with you.
Man that's beautiful. I can relate to this in my work as singing teacher. vulnerability facing glory. Josei Toda a Bouddhiste mentor was saying that if we should stop challenging ourself the water will eventually to start stagnate. I 'm trying to keep my river driver in motion. This is a beautiful experimentation of non duality no good, no bad everything needs to stay in balance. Like the sound of microphone. We wouldn't hear the low ends if the mids and high would be unbalanced. i love when i put the low cut on the microphone. the harmonics on the bottom of my voice start to sound more driven. Always this ying and yang type of relationship hiding in every little corner of our perceptions. Thank you Marc. Is it the microphone i ask you about on Groupdiy the version UAD microphone the OPA + special M7?
Thank you! And absolutely! I totally agree. Creativity has to be a challenge, or it's just ordinary. The mic in this video is a different one. This one is the "Butterstick", a 47-style body with a 3u Audio M7 capsule and Mic Parts T84 circuit.
I’ve tried the Manley 1 year ago for voice over… man.. the underlying hiss was terrible. I’ve sent it back .
Bummer. Tube mics are hard to use for most VO because of higher self noise. It’s a shame, really.
Mark! What happened?! Did you mod yourself, as well????!
This is the disguise I wear when I rob banks. Though, I probably shouldn’t say that out loud.
1973 sounds amazing on electric guitar cabinets
With that midrange. I totally believe it.
Hey Mark! The upgraded one is definitely better! Do you think that only doing the capsule mod with a BFL U87 capsule would be good enough? I can't buy the upgraded circuit, but I could buy the mic with the capsule replacement!
That's a great question. I kinda think the stock Felio capsule in the Nova may actually be a better capsule than the BFL. It's a pretty good one, so you probably won't gain anything by swapping.
Any moment I'm expecting to see Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine!
Right? It's the timbales in there that does it. Back then, Miami Sound Machine was truly the embodiment of the "sound of Miami" and broke the Miami sound of that era all over the world, so I can totally see that. Gloria's husband Emilio was a fixture on the Miami arts scene and it's kind of one of those things where he was influenced by the local culture that, he in turn, influenced back to the popular culture of the day. Miami Vice, of course, and the overall vibrancy of the look they gave the city on that show was tremendously influential in how every production coming out of South Florida was shot as well.
There's that "hint" in the music. Like any good cook it's seasoned to taste.
Spot on Mark. Would add to that a pair of cheap airpods as a second pass to round out the commuter simulation too.
Great point. Absolutely yes.
DOes this work on the P series also like the p420?
Yes
That intro was hilarious but I won’t stand for the Apollo hate 😂 I love my Apollo, I’m testing the mt48 as well and it’s nice but nothing beats the Apollo workflow.
🤣🤣
Hahaha. I think it sounds great! The AI music is hilarious!
Thank you. I can’t believe I abandoned this mic. And yeah, I was hoping someone would comment on the silly songs. Anything for a laugh.
@Mark and anyone Can I ask which one's better? The version with a 25mm or 34mm capsule? Thanks!
I have only used the 25mm version. I’m not a fan of the compromised midrange sound of k67 style capsules on flat, transformerless circuits.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Thank you, Mark! That's an important range! I'll get the 25mm! All the best and thanks for covering these in your channel!
Wow! That sounded amazing.
Thanks! I’m very happy with how it sounds.
I don't believe you, the lust is never satisfied. 😂 That thing does look and sound beautiful.
Maybe it’s the “Mod-io” mic.
That is really excellent! Definitely a contender.
What a intro...🤣🤣
It tripled the production budget for this week.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Haha😂😂 I have T-12 and T-47 and I have some plan to make them same mic with GZT-84 and flat K-87 inspired by this vid. Thanks always!
Anymore? I always go and do the "jank test." Test your audio on a janky, everyday, common speaker or three, because it doesn't do any good for something to sound exquisite on $400 monitors if it sounds like crap on the stuff everyone's listening on. Crappy airpods? phone speakers? Make sure it sounds good to the AUDIENCE.
Yeah man! Gotta jank test your sound on a regular basis. Like the old days of taking your mix out to the car on cassette tape to check it on crap car speakers.
Hello Mark, I listened carefully to the entire Miles East album "Between Lightning And Thunder". And I am very impressed with how wonderful Miles' vocals sound. This is a great credit to your microphones and the skills of the producer and recording engineer. I think this album should be submitted to the Grammy Awards. This is art in every detail. Huge congratulations to everyone who helped Miles East create this amazing album with their talent, knowledge and musical sensitivity. Greetings
I couldn't be more thrilled with your comment and I couldn't agree more that it's a Grammy-nomination worthy album. Regardless of whose mics were used, I certainly hope this music gets the recognition it truly deserves.
So....i have one of these and a 414 coming in the mail from Aliexpress right now. They really should be paying you a commission!
Hah! They should put me in charge of marketing.
Yeah. Kind of depressing for music production! Some mixers spend the majority of the time conquering the mids... Some people even mix most of the time on speakers that cut out the lows and highs.
I'd rather use an Iphone speaker for reference than Auratones.
Wow it sounds great. Congrats!
Thanks Dean! Appreciated!
I can’t tell the difference between a Behringer and a Neve on my iPhone. Microphones are a bit easier. Maybe I need to get a new set of ears.
The only question to ask when listening in a phone speaker is whether it sounds good or not. The end listener does not care what gear you use. It’s about listening as a consumer.
Best mic and zero comments lol 😂 love what you are doing. Just having fun
I appreciate that. Thanks!
Mark I know this is off topic but what headphones are you using in this video?
Beyer DT 700 Pro X
Well done !! They both sound good but they don't sound the same. The first mic has a little bit more top-end and the second mic has less top-end, more bass and presence. The second mic is the winner in my opinion.
Agreed. The Vanguard shows its no slouch and this proves to me that they are using a good capsule.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Yes indeed!!
Wonderful mic and voices Mark....wow
Thanks Bill! Much appreciated.
Do you have to own a sphere to access the emulation software? With antelope you have to put in the serial number of your mic to download the plugins.
I believe you can just buy the Sphere plug in from the UA store for $99. It used to be free before UA acquired Townsend Labs.
I does sound good with the RK47 LOL. Less sibilance etc.
Yeah, that’s the big issue with affordable mics. The mismatch of k87 capsule with a flat frequency circuit that lacks deemphasis is a sure fire way to have sibilance issues with your sound. The 47-style capsule, with its rolled off high end, is a great solution here.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Yes indeed! Flatness and smooth transients are the goals. Is you room treated? What preamp are you using?
Congrats Mark, such an achievement! I started building mics hoping I'll make something I could use myself. Once some of the mics I built got used by other people, it brought such a sense of joy it still keeps me going. I know exactly how fulfilled you must feel right now!
King!! Thank you! As amazing it is to use the mics you’ve built and worked on for yourself, it really is a whole different joy when others take your mics and make something special with them. I’m ver glad you’ve had a chance to experience it for yourself. :)
That does sound good man :). I like the richness and it still has an open midrange without that honk sound. Thanks for sharing !!
Thanks Ira! Fig-8 is the forgotten lost stepchild of polar patterns for VO for the very reasons you mention.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Yes indeed! A lot of recording engineers used the u67 in fig-8 back in the 60's and 70's. Trial and error is the key to discovery. Good job!
Wow! Thank you so much for this incredible shout out! I’m so glad you love the record and your mic played no small part. In fact, I’m very close to ordering my own!
You are so welcome! Big congrats on the new album! Your voice is amazing and this record has been burning up my headphones. The sound of the Grail fits you like a glove.
Yes!!! Congrats!!!
Thank you Horvath!
I'm so honored by this! And beyond honored to use your f***king incredible microphones, my dear friend!
The honor is mine. To be part of this is beyond incredible for me.
Still glad you did this, good to come back to these things! Thanks!
But am I glad I did this? Deep down inside, do I feel happy about doing this demo? I've started a support group for people who have compared these two mics and so far... well, I'm the only one at the meetings, which means I get to drink all the coffee and eat all the cookies, so hey, you know what, it's not so bad.
$700? No way... Joe about a $499 SE Electronics Se4400 version 2. Great all arounder.... Honestly i don't think that mic is much of an upgrade from a Rode NT1 at like $269. It doesn't even have a transformer...
After crapping all over the Vanguard V4 for a week, I think it's decidedly a better mic than it seems and quite a nicely tuned mic with lots of detail and warmth that far exceeds any piece of shit that Rode has ever put out, but that being said, I agree there is no reason to pay $700 for it unless someone literally puts a gun to your head.
Same! There’s so much debate in some circles about recording with headphones or without. But your philosophy is that your instrument is not just your voice, but the collaboration between your voice and your equipment. Mic, pre, plugins, the whole thing. And only my performing through the full chain and monitoring can you really find the resonant sweet spot and be in control of the tone you want to produce. Your performance becomes a tone, and that tone informs your performance. You can find the pocket and really settle in. I am a French horn player before getting into VO, so this idea of thinking of my mic and chain as my instrument really works for me. And has improved my performance.
As a musician, you get it. And perhaps it is an analogy that is easier to understand if you come from that background. Pure actors, which many VO artists start as, are rooted in some bullshit about the most important aspect of the job is being free from constraint. They are their own instrument. But the key is that this work is about capturing the best performance with the right sound that fits the emotion and that is why the fight for that work needs to be fought all the way to the listener’s ear and not just to the tip of the mic.
I was looking at the moded AkG P420 that I've loved to hear you on, and now I'm thinking, - what about this capsule on that? Oh please try that. I am tempted. Thank you
The AKG has built in high end de-emphasis (which I increased with thr mod). The flat47 is for a flat circuit, so it’s not a match.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Thank you. Now I'll have to go and learn what a flat circuit is. Is the flat, both on circuit and capsule, refering to output frequency response?
@@pedropittagroz8747 Yes
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Thank you. I Can feel an adiction coming. Noooooo!...
Love how casual the real pros are.
Blake is one of the most chill and with it guys you could ever meet. Unflappable. You gotta check out his interview in the new issue of Tape Op Magazine. It’ll blow your mind.
Did you build it, was it fun to build
I absolutely did. And it was fun!
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff That is so cool, I'd love to try it, just to get a better understanding of microphones
@@maxhammer4067 You have it backwards. This is an advanced intermediate level project. You should have a better understanding of microphones before you attempt this project. If you have previous Mic DIY experience, you'll have a much, much easier time with it. It's not a kit and there is no build guide.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Lol I thought it was like lego 🤣
Came back with just some good consumer Bluetooth headphones... And not anything suitable for critical listening...and man! Does the audio sound so different! It makes me wonder how many people are really even listening to these mic reviews comparisons on something even close to neutral! (Or That most people are are consuming audio on anything particularly high-end anyhow) UA-cam is also not the cleanest audio anyway for critical listening! Sounds so different on these phones... You can still tell these are quality mics but I'm losing so much detail! The The low mids are kind of heavy... The V5 could use a little more compression on the transients... If you wanted to make it sound more like the U89.
Bluetooth anything is not really the best way to listen for detail.
Indeed it is not! I wouldn't use it for critical listening! I was just curious what it was going to sound like! I'm thinking about how many people are using it! Not an audio conscious consumer world!@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff
I'm hoping the V5 and the C414 work well for music and with my voice... Because they were so affordable I decided to add them to my Mic locker! Fingers crossed!
Let us know what you think when you get some time with them.
Hello master, can you make a new video with the same plugin combination as Aston Spirit?
I don’t have an Aston spirit. Nor do I use the Apollo any longer.
Mark, you have a mind for efficient production workflows, and I'm learning so much... have you ever shared your video production workflow?
I haven’t, but it’s nothing special. I just shoot on my phone or a webcam, record audio separately and hack it together in iMovie as fast as I can.
Nice! On some mics Fig-8 just has a whole different vibe. Makes me wish I kept my WA 47jr, just as a donor body/circuit.
That would indeed make a great donor mic for fig 8.
Wow open Alive transparent
Thanks Rick! If the Arienne Flat K47 can do this to this inexpensive mic, imagine what it can do to almost any mic, right?
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff my plan is to try one in the Hulu cow 87
Can’t wait to hear how that turns out!
Bravo! Well done.
Thanks! I think... With a handle like "Inner Cynic" I hear all of your comments in my head voiced with extreme sarcasm.
Really similar! Low end on the Vanguard is lightly more pronounced tho. Great reviews! Bravo!
Thanks Vanessa!
You’ve mentioned this before, but I think there’s something about the headbasket shape and size that contribute to the density of the sound… or focus. The 017 is a higher quality capsule and circuit, but I’m hearing some of the same characteristics I hear in other mics that have that same body shape like the Blue Baby Bottle, or Bluebird. It’s a tighter pickup… almost supercardioid.
Headbasket acoustics play a big part in exactly what you said, density and focus and the incredible thing about a lollipop mic like the Soyuz is how you’re essentially just hearing the sound of the capsule without that acoustical influence, which makes the Soyuz capsule that much more impressive.
